Ancient China: Lesson 1 & 2


  • Loess: Deposits of yellow silt.
  • Huang He River: 2nd longest river in China, also known as "China's Sorrow" because it destroyed lives with floods. 
  • Chang Jiang River: Also known as the "Long River" or the Yangtze, is China's longest river. Civilization in China began along the Huang He and Chang Jiang rivers.
  • Terrace Farming: Chinese farmers used Terrace Farming to grow rice. Terraces are platforms of Earth that look like stairs.
  • Gobi Desert: Separates China from its neighbors to the North. The Himalayas also separated China from the rest of the world.
  • Zhou Social Order: 
  • Mandate of Heaven: A belief that the emperor was chosen by heaven to rule. The Zhou believed that the Tian gave a certain people an order to rule.
  • Oracle Bones: Turtle shells and other bones used by the Shang Dynasty to tell the future.
  • Diviner: Believed they could speak to the Gods and Ancestors. People went to them to predict the future.
  • Confucius: Chinese philosopher and teacher. His beliefs, known as Confucianism greatly influenced Chinese life.
  • Confucianism: Philosophy that teaches responsibility and moral behavior.
  • Heritage: A set of ideas and traditions passed on from one generation to the next.
